4 out of 5 stars Solid Mid-Range System   August 13, 2010
Eric
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I am not a techie-audiophile guy that gets geeked out on all the latest gadgets. For example, I still have an older Samsung cell phone that flips open, has a terrible camera and I do NOT have a data plan on it (internet). If you are looking for a review by someone like this look elsewhere (CNET, perhaps). BTW, I love CNET, I'm glad these people are out there. I am just not one of them. This review is from the perspective of a regular guy that just wanted an affordable surround sound system that had Blu-ray.

Overall, the value is outstanding. You can pay the same price and get a system without blu-ray. In case you're wondering, blu-ray players also play DVD's......so you have nothing to lose here. Some stand alone blu-ray players costs hundreds of dollars (about half the price of what I paid for this whole system). Blu-ray is outstanding! It's amazing how clear it is. Sometimes it actually looks like the people are right in front of you. It's crazy. I did not realize that level of detail was even possible. So, from a visual perspective this system gets an A+, without a doubt.

This system has numerous different sound settings (concert, news, drama (which seems to be the one I use the most), sports, etc). It also has "buypass" meaning that it just lets the sound come through the way the source is telling it to (this is what happens on DVD's/Blu-rays and is the way it SHOULD come through on those because they sound GREAT!). If I'm more focused on dialog I put it on news because it uses the center speaker almost exclusively and it's easy to hear what they are saying while I'm telling my 4 year old that she can't have 4 suckers and I'm trying to change the diaper on my toddler (ie: the dialog cuts through the commotion). If I'm watching TV, say, The Deadliest Catch, I will put it on Drama because it gives the program a complete FULL sound. It's kind of cool when your listening to a few deckhands talking and all the sudden out of your left back speaker you can hear a crab pot bang onto the deck. Having a system like this REALLY improves your TV experience. You can also control the volume of each individual speaker through the remote, on the fly. That's pretty awesome. You do not have to stop what you're watching, go in to the menu, etc. You just click to the speaker you want and adjust away. You can even crank the bass up as desired.

Let's face it. One of the major reasons you buy a home theater is for the movie watching quality. With my young children I don't often have the change to just sit and really get engaged in a movie with the sound cranked to the appropriate (your actually AT the movies) level. However, every now and then I get to do this. I have NEVER been disappointed. It does actually sound like you are at the movies. In fact, I have found that I will even sit through previews because it honestly sounds exactly the same as the movie theater with that specific movie trailer voice guy. The sound that this system produces is OUTSTANDING. I was watching an action movie and in once scene an ambulance slams into a cop car and sends it over an overpass guard rail. When the cop car hit the ground I could actually hear the little pieces of its shattered windshield pelting the pavement below. CRAZY!

This system has provided me with an unexpected, and MUCH appreciated, feature. Pandora internet radio. I had never even heard of it before. However, I would never buy another system that does not have this feature. It's awesome. In all fairness, Pandora is a free internet radio that anybody can use. However, if you have to use it through your PC all the time what's the point? This system has the functionality built in to use it right through your high powered speaker system. Now you can have it on in your main living area whenever you want. With Pandora you create your own music stations(s). You can create as many as you want. You just type in the name of an artist, or song and it starts playing. You can mark the song as thumbs up or thumbs down. It starts to play similar music and fairly quickly you have a station that essentially only plays music you like. It's great....and it's FREE. It also introduces songs that you would have never thought of buying through iTunes, etc. So you get to hear great music you probably would never have listened to on a regular basis otherwise. Remember how I mentioned you can select your sound type (drama, news, sports, etc)? Well, they have a concert feature that is nice to use with Pandora as well as an MP3 feature which, supposedly, uncompresses the MP3 for a more full sound. Does it work? I have no clue. But the sound is very nice. This system also has a slick iPod jack that slides out. It doesn't require awkward cables or adapters. This is a pretty cool feature but I never use it. I usually just fall back on Pandora.

I have not yet used the streaming Netflix feature. I don't have a ton of time for movie watching.
There is a USB hook up which you could use to view pictures, etc. Pretty slick.
The YouTube feature is kind of cool. However, the video quality does not seem to be very good. I'm not sure if this is an LG issue or a YouTube issue. For example, the high def videos on you tube don't look high def (not even close) when you play them on your TV through this system.

The speakers are not easily mounted to the wall. Often time's people can use a simple L bracket which attaches to the bottom of the speaker and just drill the other end right into the wall below the speaker. These speakers do not have the ability to attach an L bracket to them. Nor, do they seem to have any really easy way of mounting them. Here's what I ended up doing. I went to Bed, Bath and Beyond and picked up some wall shelves that are black and are 2 inches long by 2 inches wide and 1 inch deep (ie: they have a nice thick look to them - yet are pretty small and blend into the wall nicely). I used some drywall anchors (get the metal kind that screw into the wall with a screwdriver - they are very strong and would even screw into a stud. They are also no more expensive than the cheap plastic kind....I don't even know why they still make the plastic kind) to mount the small shelves and placed the speakers right on those. Just be sure to measure how far from the floor you would like the speakers so they all look uniform. I choose to mount mine right at head level when someone is sitting on the couch.

The speaker wire provided is not very long. Well, for the ones in front it's plenty long enough. For the speakers in back that need to follow the wall all the way around to them, the wire is not long enough. Mine BARLEY reached where it needed to be....and I have a small living room.....quite small.

All in all, I could not be happier with this system. I would buy it again in a heartbeat and would recommend it to anyone looking for a solid mid range system. If you have a large room this is going in you may want to get a bigger system. If you listen to a lot of very deep bass (hip hop, etc) the subwoofer MAY disappoint to some degree. However, for my needs, I have found the subwoofer to be perfect. You can control the db's on it. There are six different levels. I think I have mine set on the 3rd. If you do end up wanting a bigger more powerful sub the system is probably going to cost a fair bit more. You could always use this for a while and down the road purchase a separate larger "active" sub. The one with this system is passive (ie: it draws its power straight from the receiver). An active sub has a separate amplifier for it.

Now, throw back the recliner, pop the popcorn and let the fun BEGIN!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great System   July 21, 2010
Dr. El Presidente (Stillwater, OK)
Connected to an LG 26LH20-se my review of it-via a AmazonBasics Toslink Digital Audio Optical Cable (6 Feet/1.8 Meters) [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging] and Mediabridge Ultra Series - 10ft High Speed HDMI Cable - Category 2 Certified - Supports 3D & Audio Return Channel, connected to cable box by Mediabridge - Digital Audio Coaxial Cable - 6ft, all controlled by Logitech Harmony One Universal Remote with Color Touch Screen.
Great system, has good sound blaancing, and great features. Two complaints-1. Sometimes slow to respond to remote, 2. wish I oculd completely turn off SubWoofer at night, rather than just night mode.

2 out of 5 stars Slow and the buttons are hard to use   June 15, 2010
M. Schilling
This home theater was easy to set up, but there are two major problems with it. First, every time you turn the unit on it wants to update its software, so you have to wait several minutes for it to start. This is a real bummer if you just wanted to pop in your ipod into the docking station, etc. The second irritating feature is way the buttons/interface work. First, the buttons are touch sensitive (no motion, no click), and sometimes I have to push them hard several times to get the system to respond, and then it takes a long time to scroll through the features to get to the one I want. I'd rather just have buttons on the front to choose my activity (e.g., Netflix, Blu-Ray, iPod, FM, etc.); instead, invariably when the system starts up it is on the blu-ray feature, and I have to keep pushing the function key (hard, several times) to scroll through Netflix, FM, AM, OSD iPod, to get to Remote iPod. It's a silly set up.

3 out of 5 stars Fine until it quits working.....   April 30, 2010

Purchased the unit online in February based on price and features. Sound quality is acceptable, but not as dynamic as the Pioneer unit it replaced. The operating system is intuitive and I would say user-friendly. I really liked the Ipod docking station and control features.

The unit stopped working completely about two weeks ago. The vendor replied with a "30-day return policy only, please contact LG" message. My first customer service call to LG was answered promptly and I was given instructions for a "master reset" which had no effect. I then spent just under an hour on the phone with customer service, first trying bridge the language barrier, then trying to convince them that the unit is defective. After I'd finally accomplished that, I was informed they would email me a shipping label with which to send the unit to Alabama for an estimated 4-week repair. I've experienced much, much better customer service from far less reputable companies.

2 out of 5 stars Ridiculously Slow   April 19, 2010

I have 2 major problems with this unit:

1) It takes minutes to start up when you power it on. I actually turned on my PC and my LG home theater at the same time and the PC was at the Windows 7 desktop while the LG unit continued to display "Please Wait". I can't imagine what the unit is doing that takes so long. It also takes a very long time to load Blu-Ray discs, much longer than other players. This might not seem like a major issue, but it becomes very frustrating over time.

2) The Blu-Ray drive inside this player is very cheap and mine has been in the shop twice because it stopped reading perfectly good discs. Even when it comes back from service, the unit is very picky about the quality of the disc. If there is one small smudge or scratch on the media, this player will spit it back out with a disc error.
